The iPhone Developers Toolkit

Well, as many of you know, Apple released the iPhone SDK to the community earlier this month. I would say the documentation is quite good. However, only a select few have been able to actually sign up for the beta program. For those of you who feel rejected or left out, there is still hope!

I received my “rejection letter” (that most of you received) the day after the Keynote address and haven’t heard from Apple until yesterday. They sent me a simple email thanking me for my application and included an activation code link. That link opened up to a special portal in the Apple Store which allowed me to purchase the Standard Program for $99+tax, as shown below…

Standard Program receipt

Oddly enough I was unable to change the shipping method, so who knows what I’ll be getting in the mail by the end of the week. Anyways, a few hours later I received another email asking me to activate my membership to the program, as well as a courtesy call from someone at Apple!

Due to some valid concerns, I have removed the screenshots and documents outlying some of the features of the beta 2.0 release. However, you can read more about it in Erica’s blog: [linky]

Needless to say, there is obviously the new iPhone 2.0 (5A147) beta OS software available for download, more documentation describing the ability to transfer your built apps to your iPhone for testing (as opposed to just using the built-in emulator), and other pertinent information regarding the digital certificate licensing, etc. I will not have any downloads of the beta software available, so please don’t ask!

There are also quite a few disclaimers dealing with actually using the 2.0 beta software (regarding AT&T and such), but I won’t go into too many details there. There doesn’t appear to be an extra sample code from Apple compared to what is freely available to everyone.

Can you say “cease & desist”? I know I can!

When it says “may only be used for development” does that mean that the phone functions are disabled and you can’t make/receive calls?

So, just to satisfy my curiosity: did you receive a so-called “rejection” letter, and then received an “accepted” letter? Could you update the blog entry with the answer to this question? Thanks!

And thanks for the documentation, quite interesting. I believe that as an iPhone dev, you get access to some movies and example code that others don’t. :-) Anything else you can post would be most welcome by everybody, I bet.

Ashu: I realize this might be a strange request, but do you think you could post the md5 of the ipsw for 1.2 you received? I’m curious whether they’re all identical or not.

We hope that you use the SDK to make a cool looking application.

PS: if you get Flash working on the iPhone tell ME! I can’t wait to try it!

    Go Adobe!

I have been accepted too. But I did not receive the link yet.
I was curious what I should get by the mail, but then I have reviewed order details and it says “Electronically Delivered. Shipping Method Not Applicable”. Obviously there is nothing to get by mail.

Interesting… I just logged into the Apple store and checked my order status, and you are correct: it shows electronically delivered. It took about 6 hours to receive an activation link after I purchased the developer’s kit.

Awesome! Ahahaha! Stop it, you’re killing me! Anyway, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this is great.
