Thanks to a person who visited my blog and commented on my previous post, I rechecked my order status for the Apple iPhone Standard Developer’s Kit and noticed that I will not be receiving anything more from Apple later this week through snail mail.
Basically, it appears my $99+tax membership fee only gave me an activation code to access the “secret” developer’s portal and nothing else. Although the initial checkout what misleading, I guess nowadays since we can transfer most things electronically what could Apple possibly have mailed me?

As all you jailbreakers know, Summerboard is a must-have application for the iPhone to transform it from something that’s plain and boring by giving it your own flair. I recently updated my iPhone to 1.1.4 using ZiPhone, and installation was quick and easy. I also went looking for a nicer theme for my phone and came across Buuf 2. It’s a fantastic theme that looks great without being too flashy.
The best part of this theme is that not only has the author kindly made it publicly available for download, but he has also spent some time maintaining the theme by adding new icons, features, etc. You can download the theme from here if you’re interested: [linky]

Is it just me, or has winter overstayed its welcome? It’s March 19th, cold as balls, windy, and snowing… from the looks of it we may get another couple inches tonight. Tomorrow is the “official” start of Spring, and I doubt all this snow will be melted by then.
So I guess it’ll be the same as it is every year… snow until Spring, one week of Spring (max), then a blistering hot Summer.

Well, as many of you know, Apple released the iPhone SDK to the community earlier this month. I would say the documentation is quite good. However, only a select few have been able to actually sign up for the beta program. For those of you who feel rejected or left out, there is still hope!
I received my “rejection letter” (that most of you received) the day after the Keynote address and haven’t heard from Apple until yesterday. They sent me a simple email thanking me for my application and included an activation code link. That link opened up to a special portal in the Apple Store which allowed me to purchase the Standard Program for $99+tax, as shown below…
Oddly enough I was unable to change the shipping method, so who knows what I’ll be getting in the mail by the end of the week. Anyways, a few hours later I received another email asking me to activate my membership to the program, as well as a courtesy call from someone at Apple!
Due to some valid concerns, I have removed the screenshots and documents outlying some of the features of the beta 2.0 release. However, you can read more about it in Erica’s blog: [linky]
Needless to say, there is obviously the new iPhone 2.0 (5A147) beta OS software available for download, more documentation describing the ability to transfer your built apps to your iPhone for testing (as opposed to just using the built-in emulator), and other pertinent information regarding the digital certificate licensing, etc. I will not have any downloads of the beta software available, so please don’t ask!
There are also quite a few disclaimers dealing with actually using the 2.0 beta software (regarding AT&T and such), but I won’t go into too many details there. There doesn’t appear to be an extra sample code from Apple compared to what is freely available to everyone.

One would think that Apple had tested out the security update before releasing it to the public… but apparently not. According to Apple:
Security Update 2008-002 is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X. Previous security updates have been incorporated into this security update.
Unfortunately, many users have noticed one glaring bug in the update… SSH and sFTP doesn’t work anymore! How could Apple miss this one? I guess not everyone has been having this problem where a BUS error is reported, but I’m not willing to take the chance. You can view some of the discussion regarding this problem here: [linky]
So my advice is… Don’t install this update until Apple fixes this issue!
Update: it appears that the problems may be cleared up by Rogue Amoeba’s fix. So update away!
